How to effectively find job in chicago and suburbs being a college student?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

I am in undergraduate, second year program. To find internships I need to still take more classes to get enough skills. I am in Computer Science program. There are of course jobs for students that only require basic skills and high school diploma.
Currently I am looking for position in area of data entry, sales/cashier, bank teller. Where else should I look? PC technician might be good for me too? But here I might need to get A+ to have chance. I have sent more than 20 applications (resume) via CareerBuilder, Monster, ERecruiting and Craiglist. So far its been about month and I did not get any call But once my friend called and told me they asked him many questions about me (from reference). I made couple times follow-up calls but did not get call for interview. I speak two languages. In addition to English that I speak on conversational level, I speak Polish very fluently. Can you suggest me some methods to have better luck in job hunting?
Regarding on-campus jobs, it is hard to find and there is no much positions in my school. And now is summer so there is nothing much there.

Can you return a car back to the dealership if they haven’t found a bank to finance the auto loan after 1 mo?

Monday, October 5th, 2009

I no longer work and thought I could afford to make payments when I had a job. The dealership hasn’t found a bank to finance me because all the credit union that called me to verify credit and employment, I told them I was not employed (which is the truth). So the loans was denied.

finding an inv. banking job 2?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I posted a similar question a week ago, but I missed some details about me and the true nature of my inquiry. As I mentioned, I have graduated a private American liberal arts university in my country (which is Bulgaria) and I am currently working for the investment banking department of a local medium-size bank. I won from the green card DV lottery and if everything goes normally and as planned (hopefully), I think that will be leaving for the US in August 2008 as the latest time possible. My previous question was, “What are my chances of getting a job for some of the largest inv. banks in the USA (and the world), such as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Solomon Smith Barney”? Some of you gave me an advice to start working for some of their offices in my country. Unfortunately none of those inv. banks have offices in Bulgaria. Moreover there is no single institution in my country, which could call itself an investment bank. Those services are performed by the investment banking departments of commercial banks and by small financial brokerage firms, as none of them could call itself a “major player”.
I think that I have not posed the question in the right way. It is clear that my chances of getting such a job will be low. I would rather want to ask you, what I can do in meantime to increase my chances for success? Can you recommend me any books, web-pages or something similar containing information on the whole process of applying for an inv. bank from the initial CV to the final interview? Is it possible to contact the US offices of those inv. banks even before I physically arrive in the USA, right after I receive the immigrant visa? They will not be able to interview me, but I can still make some tests or whatever over the web. As some of you mentioned, the CVs of all foreign applicants do resemble each other. They have graduated unknown university and have worked for unknown employer. What do you think would contain a CV, which would set apart a foreign applicant if not from the US applicants, but at least from the other foreign applicants? I visited some world conferences on Business and Economics and published a paper with my Finance professor, but I don’t think that this will matter that much to them.
I know that it fill be extremely difficult, but I think that if someone constantly pursues his dream sooner or later it happens.

I want a part time job, as maybe a bank teller or something but?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

I’m apprehensive about applying for any job because I feel I would have to many “restrictions” as to when I could work that I feel like I would not even get considered. My husband is in the Military and works rotating shifts and we have 2 children, One is 6 and will be in first grade, the other is 3. I could put my 3 yr. old in a preschool type thing, but I would still need to be off by 3 every day to pick my daughter up from school, and I would need to be able to be off during summers, and school breaks. Would it be worth it, or any suggestions on a job that help fir my circumstances?

What are good ways to save up on money, without a job?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I am 18 years old, and have applied for a supermarket job 5 times. I put in my application with no mispellings and put my correct information on the applications, all five times. I wasn’t even given an interview (not even once). I applied at 3 different supermarkets. I have such little time, and little transportation becuase I don’t have a car of my own yet. Those supermarkets are too blame, for not giving me a chance. If one them offered me a job, I would have a car of my own already.

I save up change (coins), and when I have a large amount of change I go to the bank and change them in for dollars. I do have a savings account.

Can anyone give me any suggestions?

How do you prepare for an interview to work at a bank?

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

I want to know how should I dress(don’t want to be over or under dressed). What questions should I be prepared to answer? Also I just quit my job. What do I tell them is the reason that I left. I left because I didn’t feel I was going to advance and that one supervisor was harrassing me. I don’t want to bring anything negitive into the interview. I want to be as professional and prepared as possible. I am looking for a teller position since I don’t have any experience at a bank. Will I need experience as a cashier first before I am able to have a job as a teller?
I am 24. I have 4 years experience of customer service. None with a bank.

How to rent an apartment in New Jersey while looking for a job?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

My wife and I are looking to relocate to Jersey, to be somewhat close to NYC. We like Perth Amboy and Red Bank. Problem is, right now we live in Minnesota and it is hard to search for a job in NJ living here. But how in the world can we rent an apartment in New Jersey when we will be unemployed at first?
