I’m in Milan, Italy with a Chase debit card. Does Chase have an affiliated bank to avoid the extra charges?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

For some reason ATM here only allows me to take out 250 euros each time. The exchange rate has been around 1.47 or so with a 3 dollar surcharge in addition. With the exchange rate sucking, I dont know what’s the best way because I need to pay rent by cash. Help!

Which brand is more widely accepted in China, VISA or MASTERCARD? Also, are ATM’s widely available in cities?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I am going to China and I wanted to know if either company has more presence over another. Also, is it safe to use the ATM’s over there that aren’t at banks? In your opinion, would it be easier to pay with only cash, or a mix of cash and credit/debit?… do they take debit cards in China at stores? Also, where can I exchange USD for Chinese money?

Bank holding our money - illegal?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

My husband put $70 cash in the bank yesterday. Today, we spent $35 on our debit card. Around 5pm, we went to get some cash out because we were buying some items at the Dollar Tree and they don’t accept Mastercard (the brand on our debit card). When we got to the ATM, the bank showed that we had $46 in the bank but $0 was available.

My question is: Is that legal? For the bank to hold our money like that. We have only spent $35 of the $70 we put in so OBVIOUSLY we should have money in there. This bank has a habit of holding our money for no reason. Most of the time, money that we deposit is not available for 2 business days, even when we deposit the money as soon as the bank opens. I am really frustrated that this keeps happening, but we don’t want to have to pay to close our bank account. Is there anything we can do about this problem?
I read all the paperwork when we opened the account and I don’t remember anything about them being able to hold our money without our permission. I know that they can hold checks until they clear, but this was cash that we deposited.
