Can someone answer some questions about filing taxes online with H&R Block Taxcut?

I have always had my taxes done by Block (Federal only). I have nothing complicated just w-2’s, yet we pay over $170 each time! I was considering filing my own taxes online using Block’s Taxcut because it is only $39.95. But I wanted to know if it also does the computations for earned income credit and the child tax credit, and can you still send it directly to the IRS? Will I still be able to have my refund direct deposited into my bank account? Does it take about the same amount of time to get my refund (9-14 days)? and lastly, Is it safe? If anyone has used this online service I would appreciate any info.

The answer to all of your questions is yes. Just make sure you answer all of the questions it asks correctly and enter your W-2 info correctly as well. And it is totally safe.

I have used it before and it does the tax credits for you–it is all based on the information you enter. Once you complete all of the info it goes back over everything you have entered and lets you double check that it is all correct. You can submit electronically (e-file) and have your refund direct deposited–I think they may charge extra for this but I don’t how much (I think $15-$20) and you should have your refund in about 2 weeks. You can also go to and do them from their website instead of going to the store and buying the software.

If your income is less than around $40,000 for the year, you have another option. Find a VITA or TCE site near you - see irs.gov for more info on these programs. Trained volunteers will prepare your taxes at no charge. Most sites do both federal and state, and most sites efile the returns.
