First-time Credit Card?
My name is Olivia and I’m 18 years old, I am currently unemployed but am actively job searching. Unfortunately, because the economy is so poor it is quite hard. However, I want to sign-up for my first credit card; I don’t want to apply for a charge card, because honestly I don’t have much money. And I don’t want to be limited to a “department”/store card because I want to be able to use my card at various places. I don’t have bank account currently but as soon as I get a job I plan to open a bank account with Tyndall Federal Credit Union, it’s a military bank; my grandfather was in the military and is now a veteran, and I am claimed as his dependent. BUT I cannot open a bank account currently, so credit cards issued by the bank are not available to me either. Lastly, secured credit cards are also unavailable to me due to the fact that again I don’t have much money.
I have never paid bills, and I literally have absolutely no credit. I am not currently attending school, but I should be enrolled in a community college by May 6th, 2009.
If possible I’d like to apply and have a credit card before them.
I know it’s a little crazy to apply for a credit card, under the circumstances. However, I do make a small allowance at home; approximately $200-300.00 a month, but that income varies depending on the amount of chores and tasks that are available for me to complete at home.
I am a dependent still, even though I’m “technically” and adult. My grandfather/guardian makes about 140,000.00 a year, has great credit, and has never had late fees or anything like that. But he won’t help me due to past experiences.
I don’t know if this will play into my application but when I was a juvenile (about 13-17) I racked up multiple charges; being that I was under 18 I was never “convicted” but I was “declared deliquent”. My “probation officer” informed me that on applications I do not have to say “yes” to my being “charged or convicted”. My most recent charge was when I was 17, on February 28th, 2008; my charges were Forgery, Check Fraud, Grand Theft, VOP’s, the charges directly before that were 2 counts of Credit Card Fraud, 2 counts of Grand Theft, among other minimal charges.
I unfortunatly still owe restitution to a check cashing business in the amount of 7,200.00. Which is my point in finding a job.
Please don’t judge my past, I mean I do want honest opinions; but I was sentenced to a year in a juvenile facility where my life truly changed. I am no longer the person I was.
I would like to apply for a standard credit card. I would appreciate all the information you can provide about my specific case.
What credit card can I or should I apply for?
And if you could include some info about credit cards, etc. I would appreciate it being that I’m not to familiar with them.
Thank you so much for all you help
