Is there a way to close a WAMU checking account without going to a branch? The nearest branch is 6 hours away?

I opened an account online a while back and transferred some funds online, never had to talk to a single person, but I keep reading that you have to go to a branch to close it.

It may not officially close the account, but write yourself a check for the balance in the account and make the balance zero. That way you have all your money, and the account becomes inactive.

You should be able to write them a letter requesting your account be closed. I would call a branch and ask. There should also be a number on your paperwork or website you can call or email. Since they were just bought out they may change some of their policies to reflect the new company culture.

Listen my friend, everyone right now is trying to get their money out of WAMU because, well obviously you know why. The truth is, as long as you don’t have over 100,000 dollars in that WAMU account, you aren’t going to lose ANY money. Everyone taking their money out of WAMU is only hurting the economy more, and your money is still ensured up to 100,000 dollars. So as long as you’re not freakin’ loaded, you should be fine.
Sorry I didn’t answer you’re question, but hopefully you’ll consider the alternative :)

since you can transfer funds online, just transfer the balance of funds in that account to a local bank where you have an account, and then tell them you want to close the account.

Call the customer service phone number. I doubt they can close an account over the phone, but they CAN give you an address to mail a written request.
